Green Tourism Statement for Rowden Abbey


Rowden Abbey is committed to fostering sustainable and eco-friendly tourism. Nestled in the picturesque Herefordshire countryside, our historic estate offers a serene and environmentally conscious retreat. We recognise the importance of preserving our natural surroundings and minimising our ecological footprint. Our green tourism initiatives reflect our dedication to conservation, community, and responsible travel. By integrating sustainable practices into every aspect of our operations, we strive to provide an enriching experience for our guests while protecting the environment for future generations.


Green Tourism Policy for Rowden Abbey


1. Environmental Stewardship

Energy Efficiency: Utilise energy-efficient lighting, heating, and cooling systems throughout the property. Encouraging guests to reduce energy consumption by providing tips and reminders.

Renewable Energy: Where possible, renewable energy sources should be utilised in the main Abbey, with any new buildings on the Estate exploring and using the best possible renewable energy source.

Water Conservation: Implement water-saving devices and practices, including low-flow faucets and toilets, and encourage guests to reuse towels and linens.


2. Waste Management

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle:  Minimise waste by reducing single-use plastics, providing recycling bins, and encouraging guests to participate in waste segregation.

Composting:  Utilise a composting system for organic waste from our gardens and kitchens.


Waste and Recycling Guidelines:

Please be aware of the amount of waste and recycling generated during your stay.

Rubbish Bag Allowance - Guests are requested to keep to a maximum of 5 rubbish bags for disposal when staying for a minimum 2 days

Excess Waste Fees  - Should guests exceed this allowance, there will be a minimum charge of £40 to cover the cost of disposal for any additional rubbish bags.

Recycling Efforts  - We encourage guests to separate recyclable materials from general waste and use the designated bins provided.


Tips for Reducing Waste:

Plan meals carefully to avoid excess food waste.

Use reusable containers and bags whenever possible.

Flatten cardboard and rinse out recyclable containers to save space.

Take any large or bulky items home with you if possible.

3. Sustainable Sourcing

Local and Organic:  Source food and beverages from local, organic farms and suppliers. Prioritise seasonal produce to reduce transportation emissions.

Eco-friendly Products:  Use biodegradable and eco-friendly cleaning products, toiletries, and other consumables.


4. Biodiversity and Conservation

Habitat Preservation:  Protect and enhance the natural habitats within Rowden Abbey’s grounds, promoting biodiversity through native plant species and wildlife-friendly practices.

Gardening Practices: Employ organic and sustainable gardening methods, avoiding harmful pesticides and chemicals.


5. Community Engagement

Local Economy:  Support local businesses and artisans by featuring their products and services within our offerings.

Education and Awareness:  Provide educational materials and tips to raise awareness about environmental issues and sustainable practices among guests and staff. Inform guests of the Countryside Code when walking the Estate and local walking paths.


6. Sustainable Travel

Green Transportation: Encourage the use of public transportation, cycling, and walking. Where public transportation is not established, guests are encouraged to car share or to use 7-seater taxi services.

Due to the infrastructure and fabric of the Abbey, we request that electric vehicles NOT plug in on site, but use the alternative local charge stations in Bromyard.

Carbon Offsetting: Look to offer guests the option to offset their carbon footprint through reputable programs.


7. Monitoring and Improvement

Continuous Improvement:  Regularly review and update our green policies and practices. Monitor our environmental impact and seek innovative solutions to enhance our sustainability efforts.

Guest Feedback: Invite guests to provide feedback on our green initiatives and suggest improvements.
